Software Developer Salary in Brazil: 2026 Employer Guide

GSC’s software developer salary analysis for Brazil found median annual compensation of approximately $30,600 among respondents in selected software development roles in the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025. The 25th percentile was about $16,100, and the 75th percentile was about $54,600, based on 367 respondents.

These figures measure self-reported total annual compensation in USD, not contractual base salary. Vendor rates, loaded employer cost, employer-of-record fees, and a national salary census cover distinct populations and cost scopes. The spread is wide. A hiring team should use the distribution as a dated planning checkpoint, then obtain current BRL evidence for the named role, city, employment route, and benefit package.

Key Findings

  • Median annual compensation was approximately $30,600 across 367 respondents.

  • The middle 50% ranged from about $16,100 to $54,600.

  • Brasscom reported a 2025 software-segment average of R$6,591 per month.

  • Go had the highest selected-language median at $42,888, although the result is noncausal.

Average salary for a software developer in Brazil

The analysis covers respondents reporting full-stack, back-end, front-end, and desktop or enterprise application roles. It retained usable annual compensation records after applying data-quality exclusions.

Average total compensation in this analysis was $42,304, compared with a median of $30,582. The distribution is more useful than the average alone because the upper tail pulls the mean upward.

Buyers comparing Brazilian developers should use the interquartile range as a broad market checkpoint, then price the actual role in BRL for its location, experience, responsibilities, employer type, and benefits.

Software developer salary by reported experience

The survey’s WorkExp field measures reported years of work experience. Because employers use junior, mid-level, senior, staff, and principal titles differently, the table groups respondents by experience instead of assigning titles.

Reported work experiencen25th percentileMedian75th percentile
0 to 2 years25$6,553$10,922$14,272
3 to 5 years70$10,922$14,886$21,844
6 to 10 years91$21,844$36,407$54,611
11 to 15 years66$26,213$43,234$66,227
16+ years109$26,213$41,868$81,210

The curve isn’t smooth. The 16+ median is slightly below the 11-to-15-year median, and the final group has a wider upper range because the mix of roles, employers, locations, specialties, and respondents can change the result. Titles vary. Price a role by its decision scope and expected evidence instead of smoothing the bands or mapping them directly to job titles.

Software developer salary by reported programming language

Because respondents could report multiple languages, these overlapping groups describe association rather than causation.

Language reportednMedian annual compensation
JavaScript260$27,306
HTML/CSS240$27,306
SQL233$29,568
TypeScript185$26,213
Python156$27,397
Bash/Shell145$36,407
Java108$27,306
C#101$28,398
PHP79$25,485
Go57$42,888

The Go and Bash/Shell medians are higher in this analysis, but overlapping skills, experience, infrastructure roles, employer mix, and sample composition could explain part of the difference. A role-specific check is still required before assigning a language premium.

An independent public salary benchmark

Brasscom reported an average monthly salary of R$6,591 for CLT employment in its software segment in 2025, 2.9 times the national average shown in the same report. The report says the salary measure is the 2025 average and uses Novo Caged data available in April 2026. This figure sits within broader Brazil software sector data, although its activity definition groups several software-related categories rather than isolating custom-software engineers. Treat it as an independent benchmark alongside the Stack Overflow analysis.

The differences matter:

  • Brasscom reports a monthly average in BRL for its software-segment CLT population;

  • the Stack Overflow analysis reports annual USD compensation for a self-selected role-filtered survey cohort;

  • mean and median answer distinct statistical questions; and

  • respondent, worker, employment, benefit, and currency definitions change between sources.

Each benchmark answers its own question and is useful only with its stated definition.

Why São Paulo salaries need a local market check

The available sources support national benchmarks only. For São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or another hiring market, obtain dated BRL ranges for the exact role instead of applying an unsourced city premium.

Total cost to hire: salary, outsourcing rate, and employer cost

Four cost measures commonly appear in the same Brazil hiring discussion. Each answers one part of the budget.

MeasureWhat it describesWhat it excludes or changes
Survey compensationWhat a respondent reports as annual compensationNot a census; may include bonuses and perks
Contractual base salaryBRL salary in the employment agreementStatutory and employer costs added afterward
Loaded employer costEmployer’s salary, statutory, benefit, and operating costDepends on regime, payroll bases, collective terms, and policy
Provider billingCommercial price for a vendor serviceCan include margin, management, bench, leave, and delivery functions

Among reviewed software companies with public Brazil provider profiles and an hourly band, the median band midpoint is approximately $75 per hour. It records profile positioning; salaries and proposals for software outsourcing in Brazil require independent evidence. Comparing $75 per hour directly with the $30,600 annual compensation median would combine unlike populations and scopes.

A fee for an employer of record in Brazil is another layer. It pays for commercial employment services and may exclude salary, statutory costs, benefits, FX, deposits, reserves, equipment, and termination.

Four separate Brazil cost measures: survey compensation, contractual base salary, loaded employer cost, and provider billing.

If country selection is still open, the Latin America software outsourcing comparison places Brazil’s costs and operating fit in regional context.

How to build a software developer hiring budget in Brazil

Start with the position and use the national median as a checkpoint. A good budget model uses a low, base, and high scenario for the same role.

1. Define the role’s decision scope

State the architecture, code ownership, delivery, production, security, mentoring, stakeholder, and language responsibilities. Years of experience alone don’t describe the work.

2. Set a BRL offer range

When hiring software developers in Brazil, use current recruiting evidence for the role, city, work arrangement, employer type, and required language. Record the quote date. The USD survey distribution supplies the comparison checkpoint, while local-market sourcing sets the offer range.

3. Add employment components

A complete model of Brazil payroll and employment costs includes thirteenth salary, vacation premium, employer contributions under the actual regime, RAT/FAP, FGTS, benefits, collective terms, equipment, remote-work reimbursement, recruiting, payroll, and HR.

For 12 monthly base salaries, one full thirteenth salary plus the one-third-month vacation premium creates an identifiable 11.11% recurring cash layer before the other employer items. Don’t add that mechanically to survey annual compensation, which may already include bonuses and perks.

4. Add the engagement route

An owned entity has setup and continuing compliance costs. An EOR adds management fees, FX, deposits, reserves, and service terms. Vendor pricing reflects delivery responsibility as well as labor; the guide to nearshore software development in Brazil explains how overlap and delivery assumptions affect that route. Independent contractors require genuine autonomy and their own tax, IP, and classification review.

5. Model retention and exit

Include review timing, promotion, benefits changes, replacement time, notice, accrued amounts, FGTS treatment, provider offboarding, equipment, and knowledge transfer. A low initial offer can cost more when it lengthens the hiring process or causes an early replacement.

What affects a software engineer’s salary in Brazil

Country-level data covers only part of the offer decision. Employers still need to price the variables that change the job. The operating fit of working with Brazilian software teams also depends on communication and decision practices that salary data cannot price.

The most important variables usually include:

  • role scope and production accountability;

  • verified hands-on experience with the relevant systems;

  • engineering leadership or mentoring responsibility;

  • domain expertise and regulatory knowledge;

  • cloud, security, data, reliability, or mobile specialization;

  • English or Portuguese communication needed for the work;

  • location, remote arrangement, and working-hour expectations;

  • employment type, benefits, equity, bonus, and currency treatment; and

  • employer reputation, career path, and hiring speed.

Test each claim through work evidence. A premium needs evidence from shipped projects, not just a technology list.

Methodology and limitations

GSC analyzed public Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 microdata from the Stack Exchange Survey repository. The Brazil analysis includes respondents reporting full-stack, back-end, front-end, and desktop or enterprise application development, after data-quality exclusions were applied to the annual USD compensation field.

Stack Overflow fielded the survey from May 29 through June 23, 2025 and recruited respondents primarily through its own channels. Its compensation question covered salary, bonuses, and perks before taxes and deductions. Stack Overflow converted reported currencies to USD using June 25, 2025 exchange rates.

The result has these limits:

  • the survey is self-selected, was recruited mainly through Stack Overflow-owned channels, and is not a workforce census;

  • annual compensation can include salary, bonuses, and perks;

  • role and language categories can overlap;

  • the USD values use a June 25, 2025 conversion date and can reflect exchange-rate effects;

  • work experience is not employer-assigned seniority;

  • country medians do not price a named city, role, or candidate; and

  • the analysis describes 2025 responses even though the article is published in 2026.

The median and quartiles best describe the center and spread of this skewed compensation distribution. The mean remains in the table for transparency.

There is no single “good” salary in Brazil for every software development role. In GSC’s analysis of 367 Brazil respondents reporting selected software development roles in the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025, the median was approximately $30,600 and the middle 50% ran from about $16,100 to $54,600 in annual USD compensation. The survey is self-selected, and a current offer still needs BRL evidence for the role, location, employment route, and benefits.

The reviewed dataset supports reported work-experience bands rather than clean job-title seniority bands. Respondents with 11 to 15 years reported a median of $43,234, while those with 16+ years reported $41,868. Price the actual role instead of relabeling either band “senior.”

No. Salary or compensation belongs to an individual. A vendor rate can include management, paid leave, bench risk, recruiting, tools, overhead, and commercial margin. Public profile bands are not proposals.

No. The survey’s annual compensation may already include bonuses and perks, while Brazil employer cost depends on the actual base salary, tax regime, payroll bases, RAT/FAP, FGTS, benefits, collective terms, and employment route.

Go had the highest median among the selected language cuts shown here, at $42,888, but respondents could report several languages and the result is noncausal. Experience, role, employer, and sample mix may explain the difference.

Takeaway

Brazil’s $30,600 median is a planning checkpoint, not an offer. Build the real BRL budget from the role, location, employment route, statutory costs, benefits, and current recruiting evidence.
